The four ways a search quietly returns the wrong thing
Almost none of these are anyone behaving badly. They are the normal consequences of looking at a Chinese wholesale index through a translation layer, and every one of them is visible before you pay if you know what to look at.
The order below is roughly how often people hit them, starting with the one that catches nearly everybody.
The big one
Matching the photograph proves almost nothing
Supplier images circulate. One photograph can sit under a dozen listings from shops with no relationship to each other, at prices that differ by a factor of three, and none of them is a fake listing.
What separates them is what the shop actually has. Open the variant lists: if the colourway you wanted is missing, this is a different make of the same idea. A picture taken on a floor, a hanger or in a doorway is at least the shop own photograph, which tells you it handled the item.
The rest of them, in order of how often they bite
One line each. The right column is the check, and every check happens before money moves.
| What happens | Why | The check |
|---|---|---|
| A bargain turns out to be a pack of ten | Wholesale listings price the lot, not the piece, and the count sits inside a translated title. | Read the title for a number next to a piece counter before you react to the price. |
| Cheapest-first fills the screen with junk | Sorting by price with no floor surfaces samples, single accessories and odd quantities that share one word with your query. | Set a price floor first, then sort. The floor does more work than the sort. |
| The English word returns the wrong garment | The index is Chinese. An English word only matches when the machine translation happens to contain it. | Use the Chinese category word from the word list, then add qualifiers. |
| You searched a brand and got nothing useful | Sellers of brand-adjacent goods write names in Latin letters and often misspell them on purpose. | Search the garment, not the label, then narrow by cut and weight. |
| Two qualifiers empty the category | Every added word is another condition the title must satisfy. | Add one at a time and read the first screen between each. |
| The item arrives in the wrong colour or size | Variant selection is yours, and colour and size deviation are outside the inspection scope. | Re-read the variant line on the order form. It is the last place anyone can catch it. |
| The parcel is held for something in it | Fragrance, liquids, powders, batteries and blades sit on the restricted list. | Read Notes Before Purchasing before ordering, not after. The category page flags which families touch the list. |
| The size is right on paper and wrong in the room | Marked sizes vary by maker, and the letter on the label means little. | Use the seller measurement table in centimetres and compare it against something you own. |
The cheapest result is a question, not an answer
When we measured the first screen for forty-six category words, the cheapest result was almost never the same product as the rest of its screen. In wide categories it was a different item entirely. In narrow ones it was a larger pack.
This is not a warning about scams. It is a description of how a wholesale index looks when you sort it by price. The fix is mechanical: put a floor in the price window at roughly the middle of what the screen is showing, and the noise disappears.
What a different tab does to the same question
The same word, the same minute, the Weidian tab. The photographs are taken on floors and hangers rather than in a studio, the titles name brands outright, and the prices sit an order of magnitude above the wholesale screen.
Neither screen is the correct answer. They are answers to different questions, and picking the wrong one is the quietest way to end up disappointed by something that arrived exactly as described.
Before you pay, and after you have paid
The line between the two matters, because the things on the right are hard to undo and the things on the left take a minute.
Still free to fix
- Which source tab you are reading
- Which Chinese word you searched
- Which listing out of several lookalikes you opened
- Colour, size and quantity on the order form
- Whether the category touches the restricted list
Now someone else is involved
- A variant chosen wrongly and confirmed at the warehouse
- An item that cannot legally leave the country in a parcel
- A size that fits nobody, since size deviation is outside inspection scope
- Anything requiring the seller to be contacted after purchase
When it has already gone wrong
We cannot help with an order. These two can, and our help page sets out which desk answers which kind of question.
How to apply for aftersales
The official route, which depends on what state the order is in. Read it before writing, because the state decides what is possible.
